Reserve League- 6th game of the season.

Sean McDermotts v St Barnabas.

McDermotts went into the fixture needing to win in order to remain in joint first position in the Junior League. Due to Injuries, Suspensions, Exams and Alcoholics we only had 15 players available on the day- and one possible sub being a plague ridden Micky Dowling ready to come on 'If he really had to!'.

Macs got off to a good solid start with some well taken points from Sean O'Kane and Joseph 'The Badger' Dowling helping push Mcdermotts into a comfortable 5 point lead early on. Barnabas got off the mark following a quick counter attack with a neatly taken point and followed it up soon after with some direct football punishing McDermotts.

McDermotts really started to find their rhythm 20 minutes into the first half with the midfield of Declan Staunton and Mikey Corrigan linking up well with each other and ensuring any further counter attacks were nullified quickly and effectively. The ever young centre half-forward Ossie Bennett continued to dictate proceedings by bringing others into the game and harassing the Barnabas back line.

McDermotts created 3 fantastic goal scoring opportunities in the first half, 2 of which were created by the brilliant link up play between the pacey wing half forward pairing of Jack Hallahan and Louie Ward- unfortunately the goal chances were narrowly missed, however Mcdermotts went in at half time with a comfortable 10 point lead of 0-12 to 0-2.

Baranabas came out in the second half determined to get themselves back into the game and, assisted with a strong wind being in their favour, were able to put a couple of quick points on the board. Mcdermotts were able to respond with interest and, despite having a number of wides, stretched the lead to 13 points.

McDermotts strong back line of James Morgan, Sean Logue and John McGlade were able to effectively prevent Barnabas from getting a goal opportunity they desperately needed. All 3 worked with impressive efficiency to ensure any pressure was not converted into further scores- it was noticeable how no soft frees were given away, which was a testament to how well the back line read the game.

In the final 10 minutes of the game McDermotts took control again and made the most of their chances, a great run from the centre half-back Gus McGinn resulted in a beautifully taken point. The back line continued to support the waves of attack, with Calum Ward bursting through the middle of the pitch to set up some great chances- which was followed by an explosion of pace from Goalkeeper Dan Rushe, obviously keen to get involved in the action, made a great run the length of the pitch and was unlucky not to get a score for his efforts.

McDermotts got the second of their 2 goals just before the final whistle was blown after Christy McLean had beaten 2 men following a fantastic run down the right hand side of the pitch- his strike at goal was ferociously punched into the net by corner forward Nick Rushe who had leapt above the goal keeper and his marker to get the all important final touch.

Reserve League- 1st game of the season.

Sean McDermotts v John Mitchels

The Reserve Football league got underway on Saturday with Sean McDermotts facing John Mitchels hoping to replicate the Seniors unbeaten start to the season.

McDermotts, who were playing with the benefit of a strong breeze in the 1st half, raced to an early 3 point lead and were unfortunate not to be further ahead with a number of efforts going just wide of the post. Mitchels got their first point on the board after a quick counter attack following a period of Mac's pressure.

McDermotts continued to control the pace of the game with Corner Forwards Liam O'Halloran and Louie Ward (making his debut in the open age set-up)  notable by causing the trouble for the Mitchels back line, with their movement and energy. A further goal and a brace of points began to make McDermotts look comfortable with their lead.  Mitchels however took advantage of some soft free's that Macs gave away, to put a further 2 points on the board- which they followed up with a goal after Macs lost possession in the back line.

McDermotts again started to exert their superiority in the middle of the pitch and were rewarded with a couple of well taken scores from Joseph Dowling and Eamon Hanlon. A final free-in for John Mitchels on the stroke of half time meant that Macs went in at half time with a 4 point lead of 1-8 to 1-4.

McDermotts made their dominance count in the second half with early scores from Ossie Bennett and John McGlade followed by a dazzling run from Mikey Corrigan ending with the ball hitting the back of the net after a shot from a narrow angle, which the Mitchels keeper should probably have done better with.

What little opportunities Mitchels had in the second half were blocked and parried by a strong back line of Sean Logue, Calum Ward and James Morgan, Cianan Folan also had an outstanding game, providing additional support.

After a thunderous penatly scored by Eamon Hanlon and further points by Peter Kelly and Liam O'Halloran, Macs had strected their lead to 15 points. The game had a scrappy finish, with both sides receiving black cards.  Mitchels managed to reduce their defecit to 13 with a converted free and a narrow score in the dying minutes.
